Target Audience

Target Audience

The target audience for the genre of Pop music generally have similar interests and leisure pursuits. Social group within society for those who are appeled towards the pop music industry are usually a distinctive and recognisable subculture from their outer appearance, lifestyle and standard of living. It has been found that Pop music target audience predominantly female based rather than males. Females are the group that are more inclined to listen to pop music due to the rhythmic style of the genre, its largely up beat with a cheerful tone, as well as the typical stereotypical pop music themed songs about love, growing up or being an independent women without the need of a man which is all portrayed through the lyrics of the songs. Pop music artists are portrayed as a role model towards young teens, and extenuate their beauty and self-image in the media in a positive, inspiring way. They do this in order to engage the young teens within the public as they know most young teens are naive through engaging and following the latest media updates, therefore one way in doing so is to make them want to feel beautiful and successful as that’s the only way society will accept them.

Within 21st century and the advanced society we live in today it is much easier and manageable for the record label to target the audience of pop music not only just through advertising of music videos and the distribution of albums but through the use of merchandise, which expands the target audience and the acknowledge of the artists persona within the music industry. For instance Miley Cyrus has promoted her own fragrance line as well as stationary and clothing line. Therefore promotes Miley as an artist and increases the distribution rates, making a larger profit for herself and her record label that she is signed to. However not all music genre promote and distribute as much as the pop genre this is all due to the target audience they are appealing too. For instance the rock and indie genre target the older generation, which are more mature and establish people in society with a work and family asset. Therefore they are not lured by the media exposure as much as the younger generation are.

The target audience of pop music falls within the demographic group C2-E. This is because many of the people within this target audience would be unemployed, due to still being in full time education or the older scale of the target audience of 17-18 in a part time job. Although pop music also targets young adults in their early 20’s hence they would fall under the category of skilled manual workers as some may have full time jobs. The target audience of Pop music are generally young as this style of genre has been recently been accepted within society only since the 20th century , therefore the young youths have been brought up in this generation, where pop has been the  mainstream music style of this century.
