Conventions of various genres in music videos

In order to further my research of different genres within music videos I have researched into the expected conventions expected from each music genre. I will be focusing on 4 main musical genres in the music industry- Indie, Pop, R&B and Classical.

Indie Music Videos
The Indie rock genre often is associated with colors such as white, black and red. The target audience is usually associated to 16-32 year olds which is often shown in the intention of their music, as the lyrics are usually based on sexual references which would be acceptable for younger members of the public. The mise en sense of the albums and music videos often have an urban aspect to them as they are often filmed in warehouses and streets, where the lighting is often gloomy with a single spotlight of the band, without using many extreme wide angle shots as they see the main focus is the band, and emphasis the importance of the musical content rather than the video therefore they mainly use close4 ups/ or extreme close ups to portray a more personal relation to the artist. Occasionally there will be a narrative within the video to connect with the lyrics of the song but it very rare. When shooting an indie music video they often wear every casual day to day dark clothing such as an open t-shirt and ripped jeans giving them a wild un-kept style.

Pop Music Video
The Pop genre often use arrange of colours from the colour pallet that are seen as bright or pastel colours with a variety of shades and tone, this connotes the feeling of fun and liveliness and energetic that is portrayed throughout their music video. The colours and layout of the music genre they are appealing to the age range of 8-18. Artist within the Pop genre are clothed with fashionable, stylish trends that would be associated with the mainstream subculture. Therefore the Pop industry rather society’s tendencies rather than being independent or unique which the indie genre tends to do. Pop Music videos are themed with mainly a performance based which allows the artist to be the main focus throughout the video with rarely any camera time on the other people among her during the video. The pop artist is represented with the star image of a sexual and seductive manner, in order to lure the target audience. The camera angle chosen of often wide angle shots to show the atmosphere the artist is surrounded by as well as medium close ups to emphasis and heighten the beauty and flawless complexion of the artist.

R&B Music Video
R&B video are usually very sexual, with artist wearing minimal clothing in order to portray and appeal this seductive nature. Most R&B videos are filmed in and grey scale or sepia tone which adds a sensual tone to the imagery in the video. R&B songs consist if bright lights and a lot of quite camera shots and angles in order to build up the overall dynamic atmosphere of the video. The music it’s self of an R&B genre are fast tempo and rhythm. Many of the female R&B artist involve video that are filmed in a studio in front of a green screen, this allows when coming to editing it within the final production it can included a lot of special effects, with video many being a performance piece their women are dressed in a sexual manner with high heels to elongate their legs to make them seem more revealing and appealing to the audience. Jewellery is a key element among all R&B artists as to them it portrays there affluence and fortune, as well as a sign of religious beliefs as most R&B artist are from ethnic backgrounds. Majority of R&B target audience young adults between the ages of 13-25, this is due to the explicit lyrics within their music.
