Music video Analysis

Taylor Swift - 22

I have analysed one of the most iconic pop artist in today’s music industry, that is Taylor swift and her top chart record “22”. The video portrays the lyrics and purpose of her song about being independent and focusing on the fun filled life a 22 year old should lead with friends rather than living her life in concern and worry about issues within relationships which was featured in the music video. The video opens up with a mid-shot of Taylor pictured in front of a white wall, however the lighting of the shot has been adapted to enhanced the brightness of the shot in order to bring the shot colour and life without being too dull and plain. Her body language is very confident, with her head slightly titled look directly at the camera making a connection with the audience therefore you know from the start it going to be a performance/narrative based video.in some of the scenes in the music video there are close up shots of her wearing red hearts shaped sunglasses, connotes the theme of relationships and heart ache that she is now freed from, hence she is filled with joy and care free on relishing her life at 22, this message is continually shown throughout the video , and is something I wish to show during my own music video , a sense of conditionality of the message being portrayed during the song either directly or indirectly. Since researching pop music as a genre I have noticed the main convention I discovered across all pop music video

Is the artist often using movement or poses to represent the lyrics within their song for instance in the chorus, Taylor holds 2 fingers up to illustrate the title of the song “22”. The lighting used in the next shot allows the brightness of the sky to shine through, and creates a vibrant atmosphere which also makes the audience feel good as well. Towards the end of the song, a party begins. There are various close-ups and mid-shots showing her dancing and enjoying her life at the young age of 22. The clothing throughout the music is very realistic, to the modern world of young women in her very early adult years. She is not pictured in extravagant clothing or costumes like other artists do as it doesn’t relate to the purpose and meaning of her songs. The trended fashion Taylor wears highlights her personality; this is something I would like to emulate in my own artists to have a very realistic approach to my music video and my artists.
