My Reflection So Far

Reflection So Far

At the moment I am on target with my progression as I have finished the majority of my research within the area of music videos, I have analysed many music videos, this has enabled me to understanding to traditional conventions that are used within a music video. With also doing extra research into the different style of music video you come across within the music industry such as ‘performance and narrative’ it has allowed me to gain a further insight into the production planning stage of a music video.
While researching into the genre pop it has made me broaden my initial ideas that I intended to part take in my own music video. Because of my in-depth research into the pop genre I now have a clear and accurate knowledge and understanding of the common conventions used in the highly most professional music videos , of how to engage and appeal to your chosen target audience not only by the song/lyrics but through the preparation of producing my own music video.

I feel I am prepared to being in the planning stage of my music video, creating things such as storyboards and checklist as well as gaining photos and information of my chosen locations of where I wish to shoot parts of my music video, by doing this it will allow me to go into my production of my music video, knowing I have a clear and structured idea of the style of music video I wish to carry out.

Record labels

Record Labels
Record labels are companies that produce and distribute a variety of recorded music and promote there artists through various ways to the public such as the control of the production, , marketing, promotion, and the enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos of their artists that are assigned to their label. Within the music industry, most recording artists have become increasingly reliant upon record labels to broaden their consumer base, market their albums, and be both promoted them within the music industry. There are two kinds of record labels independent and major record labels.
Major Labels

Major labels is a record label which is dominant in the music industry that is part of a large international media group, with owning 75% of the world’s music. Since 2012 there are 3 major record labels, Sony music entertainment, and universal and warner music group. Major labels are a well-financed company, with large budgets to invest into music, therefore there are more able to distribute and market their artists
Warner Music Group began as a branch of a movie studio, Warner Bros movie studio began the label in 1958 as a way to release the soundtracks from their films. The timing for starting a music label was good because of the increasing popularity of rock’n’roll music and pop music, therefore it didn’t take long for warner record label to grow. The late 1960s and early 1970s were hugely important time for warner music group because in 1968 they acquired Atlantic Records, which at that time was well-known for its jazz and R&B. once again warner expanded buying Elektra records and in 1987, merged with the Time corporation, therefore forming a powerful media bond with Time warner, although in 2003 Time warner sold Warner music for $2.3 billion. Nowadays Warner Music Group owns or partially owns or distributes some of the world’s best known record labels, such as Atlantic Records and Roadrunner Records.

Target Audience

Target Audience

The target audience for the genre of Pop music generally have similar interests and leisure pursuits. Social group within society for those who are appeled towards the pop music industry are usually a distinctive and recognisable subculture from their outer appearance, lifestyle and standard of living. It has been found that Pop music target audience predominantly female based rather than males. Females are the group that are more inclined to listen to pop music due to the rhythmic style of the genre, its largely up beat with a cheerful tone, as well as the typical stereotypical pop music themed songs about love, growing up or being an independent women without the need of a man which is all portrayed through the lyrics of the songs. Pop music artists are portrayed as a role model towards young teens, and extenuate their beauty and self-image in the media in a positive, inspiring way. They do this in order to engage the young teens within the public as they know most young teens are naive through engaging and following the latest media updates, therefore one way in doing so is to make them want to feel beautiful and successful as that’s the only way society will accept them.

Within 21st century and the advanced society we live in today it is much easier and manageable for the record label to target the audience of pop music not only just through advertising of music videos and the distribution of albums but through the use of merchandise, which expands the target audience and the acknowledge of the artists persona within the music industry. For instance Miley Cyrus has promoted her own fragrance line as well as stationary and clothing line. Therefore promotes Miley as an artist and increases the distribution rates, making a larger profit for herself and her record label that she is signed to. However not all music genre promote and distribute as much as the pop genre this is all due to the target audience they are appealing too. For instance the rock and indie genre target the older generation, which are more mature and establish people in society with a work and family asset. Therefore they are not lured by the media exposure as much as the younger generation are.

The target audience of pop music falls within the demographic group C2-E. This is because many of the people within this target audience would be unemployed, due to still being in full time education or the older scale of the target audience of 17-18 in a part time job. Although pop music also targets young adults in their early 20’s hence they would fall under the category of skilled manual workers as some may have full time jobs. The target audience of Pop music are generally young as this style of genre has been recently been accepted within society only since the 20th century , therefore the young youths have been brought up in this generation, where pop has been the  mainstream music style of this century.

Taylor swift star Image

Taylor swift has established her star image through her appearance and the personality that comes through on her music video.  Her image connotes a fun-loving romantic young women who has a girl next door aura about her. This is shown through her bright red colour persona which has become her trademark for her as an artist.
The mise en scene in her album covers connotes positivity and fun. For example, high key lighting is used to connote happiness. Bright colours such as the red and purple are used to capture the audience’s attention and create that pop genre. Taylor’s star image is expressed well through her album covers with her body language and facial; expressions. She portrays this innocent and youthful, as opposed to many artists use a more sexual and seductive star image in order to entice their audience.

History Of Pop Music

History of Pop Music

The term Pop music originally derives from an abbreviation of ‘Popular’. The genre of popular music originated in its modern form in the early 1950’s, deriving from rock and roll. According to Grove Music Online, the term pop music originated in Britain in the mid 1950’s as a description for rock and roll and the new youth’s music styles that it influenced.
As a genre itself Pop music incorporates elements from other styles such as rock, urban etc. s well as having its own core definite elements which express pop. Pop is a very eclectic style of music, which creates short-to-medium length songs written in a basic arrangement, melodic tune, and verse chorus structure all of these components are combined into Pop music using instruments such as drums, bass and guitars to create an enjoyable and pleasant tune. As pop music is seen as a genre that is commercially recorded and desires to have a mass audience appeal.

Early Pop Music
During the 1950’s Pop music was used for a commercial sense of enjoyment, this was due down to the arrival of the broadside ballad in the 16th century which was the first form of commercial popular music in Britain this was a result of the print revolution, therefore they was sold cheaply at a low budget at a large scale until the 19th century. During the early 19th century society evolved to become a lot more complex way of life through the development of technology as well as economic and social changes.

This in led to a more advanced forms within the music industry. Music began to be a sense of entertainment of the new urban societies, adapting the existing forms of music to produce and create popular songs with an upbeat rhythm that would appeal to the people of the new industrial society. In the 930’s, the influence of American Jazz led to the creation of British dance bands, who provided a social and popular music that began to dominate social occasions and radio air.

Music genres

Music Genre
Music genre is a conventional category that identifies pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions. Within the Music industry there is a variety of diverse music genres. The most collective genres are; Pop indie, Rap and R&B. Each individual genre has similarities however there motif, musical style and musical form distinctively separate from one another.

Conventions of various genres in music videos

In order to further my research of different genres within music videos I have researched into the expected conventions expected from each music genre. I will be focusing on 4 main musical genres in the music industry- Indie, Pop, R&B and Classical.

Indie Music Videos
The Indie rock genre often is associated with colors such as white, black and red. The target audience is usually associated to 16-32 year olds which is often shown in the intention of their music, as the lyrics are usually based on sexual references which would be acceptable for younger members of the public. The mise en sense of the albums and music videos often have an urban aspect to them as they are often filmed in warehouses and streets, where the lighting is often gloomy with a single spotlight of the band, without using many extreme wide angle shots as they see the main focus is the band, and emphasis the importance of the musical content rather than the video therefore they mainly use close4 ups/ or extreme close ups to portray a more personal relation to the artist. Occasionally there will be a narrative within the video to connect with the lyrics of the song but it very rare. When shooting an indie music video they often wear every casual day to day dark clothing such as an open t-shirt and ripped jeans giving them a wild un-kept style.

Pop Music Video
The Pop genre often use arrange of colours from the colour pallet that are seen as bright or pastel colours with a variety of shades and tone, this connotes the feeling of fun and liveliness and energetic that is portrayed throughout their music video. The colours and layout of the music genre they are appealing to the age range of 8-18. Artist within the Pop genre are clothed with fashionable, stylish trends that would be associated with the mainstream subculture. Therefore the Pop industry rather society’s tendencies rather than being independent or unique which the indie genre tends to do. Pop Music videos are themed with mainly a performance based which allows the artist to be the main focus throughout the video with rarely any camera time on the other people among her during the video. The pop artist is represented with the star image of a sexual and seductive manner, in order to lure the target audience. The camera angle chosen of often wide angle shots to show the atmosphere the artist is surrounded by as well as medium close ups to emphasis and heighten the beauty and flawless complexion of the artist.

R&B Music Video
R&B video are usually very sexual, with artist wearing minimal clothing in order to portray and appeal this seductive nature. Most R&B videos are filmed in and grey scale or sepia tone which adds a sensual tone to the imagery in the video. R&B songs consist if bright lights and a lot of quite camera shots and angles in order to build up the overall dynamic atmosphere of the video. The music it’s self of an R&B genre are fast tempo and rhythm. Many of the female R&B artist involve video that are filmed in a studio in front of a green screen, this allows when coming to editing it within the final production it can included a lot of special effects, with video many being a performance piece their women are dressed in a sexual manner with high heels to elongate their legs to make them seem more revealing and appealing to the audience. Jewellery is a key element among all R&B artists as to them it portrays there affluence and fortune, as well as a sign of religious beliefs as most R&B artist are from ethnic backgrounds. Majority of R&B target audience young adults between the ages of 13-25, this is due to the explicit lyrics within their music. Most of this age group of females as female R&B are shown as strong willed about heartbreaks and relationships their it is some females can relate to, their they feel the music is personal written to them.

Music Video Anaylsis 2

Selena Gomez- Who Says

The song “Who says” written by song artists Selena Gomez who is seen as a successful artist in the pop genre. The song is about one embracing and accepting their own individual self, and don’t let anyone bring you down and make you feel like you have to hide the true you. During this video the artists gives us a personal insightful performance with a lot of close up shots that enhances her connection and emotions with the lyrics. The lighting is faint and dim, which may suggest there will be a build-up when it comes to the chorus of the song which in keeps with the meaning of the song. The following scene portrays Selena walking down the city street with heels this contradicts and denotes with the lyrics that she doesn’t need these necessities to make her feel good, this is focused on with a close up of her shoes. When an object is focused on during a pop music is mainly because they link in with the narrative and allows the audience to get an insight and understanding of what the music video as well as the song are trying to portray. During the chorus of the song, Selena is shown standing against a building wall with a backdrop written "Beautiful since '92". This wide shot allows the audience to see what positive message Selena is trying to convey in the video and also matches the lyrics of the song which is commonly seen in pop music videos. There are several other location that are visited during the music video, which is a common convention of in pop music video that they show 2 or more locations. In the bridge of the song, various camera shots and angles are shown of Selena removing her make-up which could represent how she doesn't need people to tell her she needs such superficial objects to feel beautiful and reflects the continuous message of the lyrics shown throughout the video. Once she has removed the make-up, a close-up of her (with what appears to be slightly filtered lighting) allows us to see her bare faced and looking even more relaxed than she did at the beginning of the video.

Music video Analysis

Taylor Swift - 22

I have analysed one of the most iconic pop artist in today’s music industry, that is Taylor swift and her top chart record “22”. The video portrays the lyrics and purpose of her song about being independent and focusing on the fun filled life a 22 year old should lead with friends rather than living her life in concern and worry about issues within relationships which was featured in the music video. The video opens up with a mid-shot of Taylor pictured in front of a white wall, however the lighting of the shot has been adapted to enhanced the brightness of the shot in order to bring the shot colour and life without being too dull and plain. Her body language is very confident, with her head slightly titled look directly at the camera making a connection with the audience therefore you know from the start it going to be a performance/narrative based video.in some of the scenes in the music video there are close up shots of her wearing red hearts shaped sunglasses, connotes the theme of relationships and heart ache that she is now freed from, hence she is filled with joy and care free on relishing her life at 22, this message is continually shown throughout the video , and is something I wish to show during my own music video , a sense of conditionality of the message being portrayed during the song either directly or indirectly. Since researching pop music as a genre I have noticed the main convention I discovered across all pop music video

Is the artist often using movement or poses to represent the lyrics within their song for instance in the chorus, Taylor holds 2 fingers up to illustrate the title of the song “22”. The lighting used in the next shot allows the brightness of the sky to shine through, and creates a vibrant atmosphere which also makes the audience feel good as well. Towards the end of the song, a party begins. There are various close-ups and mid-shots showing her dancing and enjoying her life at the young age of 22. The clothing throughout the music is very realistic, to the modern world of young women in her very early adult years. She is not pictured in extravagant clothing or costumes like other artists do as it doesn’t relate to the purpose and meaning of her songs. The trended fashion Taylor wears highlights her personality; this is something I would like to emulate in my own artists to have a very realistic approach to my music video and my artists.

Todorov's Theory

Todorov’s Theory
Todorov’s in 1969 created a narrative theory, which he stated that the majority of all films follow the same narrative pathway. He believed there was 5 stages that a narrative structure can be developed throughout and story or film.

State of Equilibrium- This is where the setting and the base of plot is expressed to the audience, and everything is as it should be, with no disruption to the plot.

A disruption of this equilibrium by an event- This is where the plot and setting of the storyline is changed dramatically by a sudden, unsuspected event.
A recognition that the disorder has occurred – this is where something particular affects the lead character in the film.  In music video this will be signified clearly to the audience by the way the artist’s response to the form of disruption, whether it be a positive or negative event by the use of facial expression, music and lighting.
An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption – This is the moment that the lead character feels the need to repair the damaged made within the storyline. During a music video the artist has recognised the disruption and will confront it Eg.  In Taylor Swift’s music video” We’re never getting back together” she dumbs her boyfriend for cheating on her. Therefore this is the outcome of the disruption although it is negative.
A restoration of the equilibrium – In the film the lead character manages to defeat the event that occurred, however for a music video that means the storyline will return to a normal state.

An example of the narrative theory used within a music video.

She’s The One – Robbie Williams

1.      Equilibrium – Shots of the ice skaters with their coach winning medals and smiling. The skaters in training.

2.      Disruption – The male skater falls over while they are practicing and injures his ankle so cannot skate.

3.      Realisation – The coach has memories of his first pair of skates and when he used to skate. He realises he may have to perform again.

4.      Attempt to repair the damage – The coach enters the competition and performs the routine with the female skater.

5.      Restoration of the equilibrium – The ice skaters get a high score from the judges
