The song “Who says” written by song artists Selena
Gomez who is seen as a successful artist in the pop genre. The song is about
one embracing and accepting their own individual self, and don’t let anyone
bring you down and make you feel like you have to hide the true you. During
this video the artists gives us a personal insightful performance with a lot of
close up shots that enhances her connection and emotions with the lyrics. The
lighting is faint and dim, which may suggest there will be a build-up when it
comes to the chorus of the song which in keeps with the meaning of the song.
The following scene portrays Selena walking down the city street with heels
this contradicts and denotes with the lyrics that she doesn’t need these
necessities to make her feel good, this is focused on with a close up of her
shoes. When an object is focused on during a pop music is mainly because they
link in with the narrative and allows the audience to get an insight and
understanding of what the music video as well as the song are trying to portray.
During the chorus of the song, Selena is shown standing against a building wall
with a backdrop written "Beautiful since '92". This wide shot allows
the audience to see what positive message Selena is trying to convey in the
video and also matches the lyrics of the song which is commonly seen in pop
music videos. There are several other location that are visited during the
music video, which is a common convention of in pop music video that they show
2 or more locations. In the bridge of the song, various camera shots and angles
are shown of Selena removing her make-up which could represent how she doesn't
need people to tell her she needs such superficial objects to feel beautiful
and reflects the continuous message of the lyrics shown throughout the video.
Once she has removed the make-up, a close-up of her (with what appears to be
slightly filtered lighting) allows us to see her bare faced and looking even
more relaxed than she did at the beginning of the video.
