Analysis Of Filming Footage
I have started to begin uploading sort clips of my filming
footage, there are a variety of scenes .Some of the clips I may decide to
include in the production of my music video, and to help decide the best
possible footage for my music video I thought it would be useful to
analyse into parts I like and dislike about certain clips of footage.
Preferably I would like to use the clip for the opening
scene to my music video, I like the contrast of dark to light, it would engage
the audiences audience from the moment the song starts as there is this sudden,
unexpected movement, when the lights draw up and you get the glare of the
spotlight that enhances the light expose within the clip and the medium shot
angle heightens my artists facial features which is crucial as she sings the
song through the emotion and express on her face.
This is clip I like the close up , that gradually zooms out
as my artists moves towards the camera , and the use of movement again is
effective as its links to the lyrics “Tiger” however I don’t like the angle of
the shot , I like how I have tried to incorporate didn’t shots and angle to
intrigue my audience however this particular shot is to low and doesn’t portray
my artist in the best lighting , I feel if I used this clip my audience could
lose interest and feel uncomfortable to watch it.
Location
Dorothy Marshall
dance studio
I will also be filming the performance scene of my music video at my current dance school. Which is situated in Plumstead, south east London. Using this location during my filming shoot, allows me to high quality lighting, in a large area space with a plain white backdrop where my actor can be filmed against. I wanted to keep the location plain and simple, in order for my actor to be the main focus during that particular shot. My actor will be costume wearing an effective black casuist which will stand out against the white prominent background. Using this location allows us to progress within the filming process as we won’t be disturbed and effective, by member in the public getting in the shot, as this will be one fact I will have to consider when filming at my first location. Due to this location being positioned inside I don’t have to encounter the weather forecast, which gives me a border time scale of when I can film within this particular location.
Filming Evaluation
During my filming process of my music video I didn’t feel
there were any major issues or problems that affected me from completing my
filming.
Problem encountered during
filming shootAt the beginning of my filming shoot, there was a slight problem with the quality of the camera, it wouldn’t focus on my artists, and any photo’s I attempted to take was unclear and slightly blurry. This was slightly annoying after all the preparation of hair, makeup and booking the location of music video, I was set back by a technical fault. Therefore I assumed I would have rescheduled the filming session, and return the camera for another that worked properly.
However I solved the issue by looking at a tutorial on YouTube that was a step by step guide in how to adjust the focus of a ‘canon eos camera’, and found that the camera focus was on a low level , which resulted in the having a tinted blur when taking a photo. After changing the focus of the camera the filming shoot was able to proceed.
Problem encountered during
filming shoot
In order to help me during my filming shoot to get clear
steady shots I used a tripod , however when setting up my equipment , I noticed
the tripod was broken , one of the screws was loose therefore it want able to
hold the camera upright and it just kept falling off the stand. I initial
assumed that I would have to choose another day to shoot my filming , as it was
a crucial that my music video pictures was steady and unclear and not jumper
when you can see the camera moving about. This would have set my back several
days and it would have been unlikely I would have be able to finish it before
the deadline date.
Nevertheless I was able to work round the issue by using
several wooden boxes and them up to the high I needed my shoots and used that
as a compromise. It makes it more difficult by adjusting the height of the
boxes all the time but it enabled me to get steady footage for my music video.
Success during my music
video
I felt that overall the filming shoot was successful and a
positive outcome, which is not what I initially, assumed it would be. After
getting into it, the filming process was quite enjoyable.
I fault before beginning my filming shoot that my time
management would be quite poor as I was limited and restricted to the amount of
time as my artist had other plans to do at a particular time, that she was
unable to reschedule. However that was not the case of the day as I was able to
film all the scenes I wanted featured in my music video, with also enough time
to look back at some of the shots and redo those that didn’t come out as well
as I hoped. I followed the timetable I had produced in order for me to keep to
the allocated times I allowed myself in order to get the filming shoot
finished.
My main worry I thought would accrue is the battery of the
camera. As the camera I didn’t have a portable charger that I was able to take
with me during the filming shoot, therefore I had to take my laptop and usb
charger in order for the battery not to run out half way through my filming
shoot, as it would have caused many problems, and may have even restricted me
in the amount of time I had prepared for my filming shoot.
I
was really pleased for who I chose to star in my music
video , as she did extremely well in portray the star image I had in mind for
my artist. My actor was a close friend of mine, therefore i felt at ease and
comfortable working with her. Both myself and my actor our dancers and worked
together before therefore I knew our personality worked well , making it easy
to come up with ideas and create the
dance chorography for the music video , as she had already had dance training
experience which saved time. Because my actor has dance experience for
several years, she took my criticism as
professional rather than personal , when I corrected her on certain scenes as
they wasn’t planning out how I imagined them too. Due to her positive attitude
and enthusiasm it made the filming shoot run smoothly, with little tension, and
we both really enjoyed working together as a team.
Ancillary Task Photoshoot
The photo shoot for my ancillary tasks was very successful, for the limited amount of time both me and my artist had. I didn’t have any costume or location changes as I used the my audience response I received from my focus group, as the majority of my target audience felt that the “Catsuit” costume would be most appropriate for my music video , with setting being shot in one particular location to make it more professional. Most of the images taken were clear and focused however the natural light in the room was quite dull and dark, I used a spotlight to enhance the quality and brightness of the photos during my photoshoot.
Progress of my digipac
I have chosen to use images of my artist through the design and layout of my digipac, as from my results I gathered from my questionnaire and additional research into the structure of album digipac the majority of them have images of the artist running though the digipac to add as sense of continuity and constancy of the link between the album and the artist. For my inside left panel of the digipac, I have chosen to script the lyrics of the featured song on the song “Royals”. I felt this is a good way to promote the song further, as it enables the audience to sing along with the song. I personally felt, that I personal fan message from the artist was too informal and unprofessional for the layout and style i was portraying in my album. I am using my audience feedback, gathered from the age ranges between my target audience, to help me structure and design my finalised digipac.
I
am happy with the layout and style of my digipac, as I feel it will appeal to
the target audience looking professional, however some of my layout and design
may change during the construction process of creating the digipac, as it may
be some images/photos, don’t work well with the back ground and colour scheme of
the digipac, and the text not sit right where I initially would have like to of
placed it, although I won’t know until I get to the editing process of
designing my digipac
Typography and Iconography
Typography
Typography
refers to the arrangement of text on a page, and appears in some form of
written communication. Depending on the purpose, it can be used for optimum readability, impact, or
for an artistic statement. Typography is a combination of font, size, spacing,
and colour. With the choice of typeface affecting
how a piece communicates and connects to the audience. In many advertisements
they use text as a more simplistic way of a visual medium in order to grasp the
audience’s attention rather than the use of bold/bright colour and large print
images.
Therefore typography is a crucial factor accounting for 95% in the design process of an artist’s album. It also presents the genre of music the artist is associated with. Although with the use of both colour and images, that highly complement the chosen style of typography can engross and captivate the target audience. When creating my ancillary task it is important I that I take into consideration the typography, as there needs to be a sense of synergy throughout both my music video and poster/digipac as well as my artist’s star image.
I gathered a small
focus group in order to gain there perspective and insight on serval different
typography’s that I could use for the album name.
Conventions of a digipac
Music videos are only one section of a Promo package. The promo package is consisted of a music video, a digipac and a magazine advertisement (poster).
When looking
at digipac I must consider the entire layout in order for it to represent the
theme of the album; however I must portray this theme through the use of font
and style making sure it is consistent throughout the digipac. The use of
element such as photography angles and shots are a crucial element within a
digipac, as this the particular part that engages and appeal to the target
audience. The style of the digipac massively influences the star’s image and
reputation.
When creating
a magazine advertisement (poster), the layout of the poster has to be portrait
for advertising, this is a particular set ideology when creating a poster to
publicise a new coming album of an artist. When trying to capture my target
audience I have to consider audience demographics, age gender and ethnicity
that the artists are appealing to within their album. As well as literary
techniques such as font , size , grammar, composition, lighting as all these
aspects with determine whether or not a member of the target audience will
purchase the album.Filming Sheldule - Day 2
I decided to make a second schedule for the filming process of my music video. This just a short time span for my filming shoot, as I am restricted to the times I can use the dance studio, as the room needs to be used later on during the evening. Although I feel I have plenty of time to re-shoot short scenes and shot of the music video, so I have a variety of angles and shots I can choose from. It also allows me to use the rest of the time slot I am allocated to photography Phoebe (actor) for my ancillary task of a poster and digipac.
I have
already received confirmation that phoebe has changed her original plans she
had for this particular day to be able to attend the second day of filming.
Ancillary Task Questionnaire
I’m beginning to plan the second part of my A2 media course
work, of the ancillary tasks. This entails creating both a digipac and poster
as part of the advertisement of the music video I produced/created. I have
created a survey intended for my chosen target audience, in hope that I will
receive useful and beneficial responses that will help me in the construction
process of designing my ancillary tasks.
I have been fortunate enough to receive a large response
rate from my target audience, from this I gathered a mixed responses in opinion
in a few of the questions however the majority of the time , my target audience
had a joint opinion in the theme and style they feel that both my poster
and digipac should be presented. I felt
this was most effective way to gather useful information, as it allows me to
design my advertisement poster and digipac around the bases of my target
audience which is the initial purpose of creating and designing advertisements
to promote and intrigue your target audience in the product you are selling.
Question 1. What
attracts you to a poster and digipac album?
From this question the results clearly show that my target
audience expect to see colour more than anything else on advertisement digipac
and poster. They felt that colour is the key factor, as it engages their
attention, often brighter colours such a blue, purple or yellow more than the
darker dull colours such as black or red. I personally agreed with the response
from my audience their I will incorporate this idea when designing my products.
Question 2. What
information do you think is most necessary for a poster advertisement?
From this question it was a 50/50 response from my audience.
Some felt that name of the artist was most important to include others
disagreed and stated that the release date was most necessary. I felt that both
are as equal as one another. As quite a few artist often don’t use a
photography of themselves to promote their album or use an image that doesn’t
show the artist as they are usually portrayed, therefore they need to make it
clear to their target audience that it is their album otherwise they can run
the risk of losing buyers. However the release date of the album is also
important as it informs the audience the specific date the album is coming out.
These are 2 essential factors that I will use in my advertisement poster and
digipac.
Question3. What camera shot you think would be best for an advertisement
poster to promote my music album?
From this question it was a mixed
response rate between all 4 options. None of my respondents felt that a long
shot was appropriate for a poster, this was due to the fact that even though
there was an image of the artists, it would be unclear to the audience and
unrecognisable who was promoting the album because the shot was taken so far
away. 60% felt medium close up shot was best for a poster as it allows the
location, costume to be captured in the shot , allowing the audience to
distinguish the theme and style of the album, the artist is promoting.
From this question the results show that none of my
respondents wanted to see a personal message from the artist on the inside
panel of the digipac as they felt it was too in personal, and felt that
sometimes in other albums they didn’t feel that the artist actually wrote it
themselves but one of their representations such as a manger. 90% wanted
printed lyrics from the main song promoting the album, as they enjoyed singing
along to the song but need clarity of some of the lyrics therefore they felt it
would be useful to have it within the panel of the digipac. The other 10% would
like to see images of the artist on the inside panel. However I felt that doing
that would look unprofessional and irrelevant to the audience’s interest. So I
felt that the best design for my inside panel is to have printed lyrics of the
song to allow the audience to be more involved with the artist and the songs.
Preparations For Filming
I have researched the
weather forecast for Saturday 15th November, as this is the particular day I am shooting my music video. In order for
my music video to have a range of elements and shot, I felt it was vital that I
should film some of the scenes of my music video outside, so that my music
video has a good sense of mise en scene. However there are complications with
filming outside in open space, and there is one crucial element that is
uncontrollable, the weather. Therefore I felt it was appropriate for me to in
advance check the weather forecast to avoid any complications that could affect
my filming.
According to the
BBC weather, the sky will be partly cloudy and slow-moving scattered rain with
some sunshine during mid-day, with variably normal temperatures of 10-11. This
is the typical weather I suspected for the autumn/winter season that we are
currently in. This particular over cast is very usually for me in my music
video as it would contribute to the mise en scene that I am trying to portray
within my music video. The video is meant to portray those who are less
unfortunate, who don’t have life and wealth come easy to them unlike others
within society, therefore I felt the dark grey clouds will help to reflect that
across to my audience. The temperature of 10-11 degrees is a reasonable and
safe environment for my actor to be outside, yes it will be slightly breezy
with wind speed up to 7 mph, but yet still a confortable temperature to work
in, without my actor getting ill from low temperature within the air. That
particular day the sun sets at 4:10 which doesn’t affect my filming schedule as
by 3 o’clock i will be moving locations and filming inside.
Mise en scene
Makeup
Smokey
eyes one of the most popular styles of makeup for world famous icons. The
‘Smokey eyes’ style is adaptable for any time of the day, or night. Smokey Eyes makeup create dramatic eye producing a seductive and
glamorous look. It is a completing
different look form a natural appearance as the Smokey eye creates a heavy and
dramatic appearance, which is the style that is reflected through the artist’s
lyrics. When creating my Smokey eye affect it is important I choose tones that
compliment eye color and skin tone of my actor. Grays, blacks and tans are
flattering on those with green and blue tinted eyes. When creating the facial
look of Smokey eyes, they should be the highlight and dominate the rest of the
face, therefore Minimal cheek and lip color such as nude lips and light bronzer
help make the eyes attention more protonate.
I felt that the smoky eye style would engage the
audience slightly more than bold red lipstick, as during my filming i will more
shooting a lot of angles that enhance the features of the eyes and lure the
audience in through the shot of eye line match. This particular style of makeup
will help me portray the mise en scene of my music video, as my actor will be
appeared as if she is majestic and noble, which relates to the lyrics of the
song “I’ll never be royal”, by doing this there will be a sense of continuity
between the lyrics and the music video.
Hair
Loose
curls/ wavy hair have both retro and modern appeal creating aesthetic stylish
women. This is the particular image I wanted to portray my artist as, however
in order to create this hair style you don’t just use the particular curling
iron, as they designed with perfectly round corkscrew curls. This style is used
throughout the media, in which my target audiences are pronoun to see it on
well-known Hollywood stars at red carpet events for premieres and award
ceremonies that model this style and inspire the females of today with their
artistic style and beauty they express.
One of
the leading Hollywood actresses modeling the loose curly hair style. She looks
glamorous and seductive on the red carpet events, this is the particular
persona I want to reflect my artist as in my music video.
