Typography and Iconography

Typography

Typography refers to the arrangement of text on a page, and appears in some form of written communication. Depending on the purpose, it can be used for optimum readability, impact, or for an artistic statement. Typography is a combination of font, size, spacing, and colour. With the choice of typeface affecting how a piece communicates and connects to the audience. In many advertisements they use text as a more simplistic way of a visual medium in order to grasp the audience’s attention rather than the use of bold/bright colour and large print images.

Therefore typography is a crucial factor accounting for 95% in the design process of an artist’s album. It also presents the genre of music the artist is associated with. Although with the use of both colour and images, that highly complement the chosen style of typography can engross and captivate the target audience. When creating my ancillary task it is important I that I take into consideration the typography, as there needs to be a sense of synergy throughout both my music video and poster/digipac as well as my artist’s star image.

I gathered a small focus group in order to gain there perspective and insight on serval different typography’s that I could use for the album name.

Iconography

Iconography is the variety of presentational devices such as images/props that become synonymous with a genre of which any media product can lie in as long as they follow the created concepts of the particular genre.

Pop videos tend to be the most vibrant in terms of colour, mise en scene and the music itself and the videos mirror that. The colours are bright and express the upbeat atmosphere of the song. This done through the use of bright lighting and setting of a music video which is often in an empty space, where the use of choreographed dances are featured in the music video. The pop genre incorporate mise en scene within music video of costumes , which are often extravagant outfits that enable them to stand out and make statement about who they are as artists. Theses particular music videos are shown to be very successful within the industry
